Shut Eye Canceled After Two Seasons on Hulu

Hulu continues to clean house.

The streamer has canceled Jeffrey Donovan and KaDee Strickland drama Shut Eye after two seasons. The news, announced Tuesday in a tweet by Donovan, comes nearly two months after the sophomore season launched. Hulu has confirmed the cancellation.

Produced by Sony Pictures Television Studios, the show revolved around a former fake psychic scammer (Donovan) who starts to experience visions that may or may not be real. 

Hulu, like fellow streamers Netflix and Amazon, does not release viewership information. The series had a mixed score of 50 among critics on Metacritic and a slightly more favorable 6.4 score among users. The drama, which also changed showrunners in a bid to draw a wider audience, ultimately did not cut through.

The decision to cancel Shut Eye comes as Hulu is refining its scripted strategy under new chief content officer Joel Stillerman to better compete with deep-pocketed rivals Netflix and Amazon. To that end, Hulu this month canceled Hugh Laurie drama Chance after two seasons and recently announced the upcoming final season of comedy Casual, while also wrapping The Mindy Project last year. The streamer, which has the highly anticipated second season of Emmy-winning drama The Handmaid’s Tale due in April, has a full slate of originals that also includes recently renewed drama Runaways and comedy Future Man. Next up this year are Beau Willimon’s ambitious space drama The First, starring Sean Penn; limited series The Looming Tower; Universal Television-produced The Path; and the Stephen King/J.J. Abrams anthology Castle Rock, among others.
